How does veterinary euthanasia work?

Euthanasia performed by a veterinarian is a quick and pain free process. The medication is given through an IV injection. It acts almost immediately stopping your pet’s heart and brain within minutes. The procedure ensures that your pet passes away peacefully.

How do I know euthanasia is the right choice?

It will be difficult for you to come to terms with the idea that your loyal companion won’t be around anymore, but it may be the right decision to make. Your veterinarian will discuss euthanasia with you if your pet has a chronic disease or injury that is not treatable. In both instances, the quality of your pet’s life rapidly decreases due to pain. You’ll start to notice that your pet is more withdrawn or not affectionate, they sleep more, eat less or become uninterested in activities that they once enjoyed. A poor quality of life means that your pet is just existing and not enjoying life.

How do I prepare for a euthanasia appointment?

Once the appointment has been made please spend as much quality time as possible with your pet. Other members of your family should also be given the opportunity to say goodbye. It is also a good time to think of ways to memorialize your pet and think about after-care options. Experiencing the loss of a loved one will be difficult, we can recommend grief support groups that can help you celebrate your pet’s life and process your loss.
