Bloodwork

Blood tests are important diagnostic tools for determining your pet's health status.

Blood tests play a big role in diagnosing conditions in your pet. We perform bloodwork to learn about the changes in their health. Regular blood tests can detect health problems before they create long-term damage. Our hospital has a laboratory on-site where we can test blood, urine, fecal and skin samples. To learn more about your pet’s bloodwork, please schedule an appointment at 604-591-5304.

Will my pet need blood tests if they look healthy?

Yes. Many of the diseases or conditions your pet may have don’t show physical signs in the early stages. Bloodwork can detect underlying problems and monitor your pet’s health when they seem healthy. We may also recommend blood tests for other reasons like:

  • Pre-anesthetic Testing (before every surgery we run blood tests to determine how much anesthesia to use)
  • Baseline Health Information (if your pet is healthy it’s a good time to learn normal blood levels which can be used for comparison in the future)
  • Senior Wellness Check (senior pets are predisposed to age-related illnesses and routine blood tests detect them early)

What health issues can be detected with blood tests?

Blood tests can reveal many health issues in your pet. We perform a complete blood count (CBC) that gives an in depth look at your pet’s biochemistry and hematology. Blood tests can show:

  1. Pregnancies
  2. Allergies
  3. Parasites
  4. Bleeding disorders
  5. Anemia
  6. Infections
  7. Heart disease

How can I prepare my pet for blood tests?

Prior to your appointment our team will provide preparation instructions which may include fasting. Your pet may be required to fast for at least 8 hours before blood tests to get a good blood sample. The process is carefully carried out by our team so your pet won’t feel any pain.
