Here at Kennedy Heights Animal and Bird Hospital our bird vets are dedicated in providing education, annual wellness care, emergency care and treatment for your feathered friend. Dr. Linda Schild and Dr. Zoran Radnic both share a special interest in birds, though in some cases we may refer you to a specialist.
It is common for people to have personal annual physical examinations or take the dog and cat in once or twice a year so why not the bird in your family? IF is important to have any new bird examined within the first couple days after introducing them into your family. Our job is to help ensure your pet stays as healthy as possible and provide preventive medicine.
Did you know?
In the wild, a bird will attempt to display a strong appearance even when sick. This is called "Survival of hte fittest". By the time a bird actually shows signs that it is unwell, it is likely that they have been sick for some time. Wellness examinations are important as we may pick up subtle signs of disease.
If possible, bring your bird in its cage so we may assess the bird's environment, food, feeding arrangement and some of the droppings on the bottom of the cage. If you are unable to do so, show us a picture of your bird's living environment! If this is the bird's first visit to see a bird vet, then a lot of information will be gathered initially pertaining to you and more importantly, your bird. The age, sex, species, previous background the bird may have had, diet and length of current ownership will be recorded in your bird's permanent medical record. We will record the weight and observe your avian friends attitude, posture, feathering and physical condition. Your bird will be properly and securely restrained to prevent injury to person or pet and examined in depth physically. We will note any abnormal findings or changes in eyes, ears, beak, nose, mouth, skin, feathers, wings, legs, nails, vent, chest and abdomen. At request your birds beak and or nails may be trimmed and wings can be clipped.
We will discuss the need for testing with you depending on what has been found on the examination. Wellness testing will provide further information important to assessing your pet's condition. We perform routine fecal tests to detect and identify bacteria in a apparently healthy birds stool sample.
We may discuss or give you information on proper diet and care for your particular species of bird. The earlier we catch the signs of problems, the better the changes that your pet will live a longer healthier life.
